Quite the lovely love story. I adore Pat Merton and Fen Carruth so much, I wish I could jump inside this story and be their third wheel. The plot was as exciting as was the getting to know you/falling in love storyline. Crack shot Pat was by her own definition, sensible and capable, and yet her feelings for Fen were so lovely and honest. They made for a very complimentary team- Fen being more then meets the eye- not just a pretty package. The antagonist was horrid, so much so I literally could not wait for his bad end. Supporting characters nicely drawn with Bill being my favorite.The setting of story, taking place after Fens engagement to Pats old friend in his family house for a shooting party, was so English, my love of all things British was delighted! I may have gone into the book with too high expectations. I really liked the idea of the book: the country setting, romance, and murder mystery. I did like the book, but it wasn't everything I dreamed of.I liked the setting up of the romance, the conversations and events were nice and well done. However, I thought that for a lesbian romance the book was certainly written focusing too much on the appearance. I didn't think it was necessary to convince the reader that average, plain Pat was the height of sexual attraction to Fen in a purely physical way. Pat was also, in my opinion, hung up on Fen's appearance in a very mannish way, appreciating the things a man would, in the words a man would. I did like Pat's uncertainty in how seriously to take the developments of their relationship, considering her past experiences of women's romances being disregarded.The murder victim was a necessary evil for the plot of the book, but still I didn't enjoy multiple scenes of his pointed unpleasantness. The murder happens fairly deep into the book, and thus the reader is made to endure his unpleasantness for quite some time. Then the murder was also solved very swiftly, and it wasn't really that satisfying. It was alright, and consistent, but it might have been that the author doesn't have that much experience in writing intricate murder mysteries. Or I just had too high hopes.
